There is a centuries-old Japanese art called Kintsugi that offers a powerful parallel to life after aortic disease. ❤️

Kintsugi, meaning roughly “golden joinery,” is the art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer traditionally dusted with precious metal, such as gold.

But here's what makes it so meaningful:

✨ The repair isn't hidden.

Instead, the cracks become part of the beauty and history of the piece.

❤️ Our Bodies Tell Stories, Too

Many people in the aortic community know what it means for life to suddenly be divided into before and after.

Before the diagnosis.

Before the dissection.

Before the surgery.

Before the loss.

Some scars are visible. Others are hidden—fear, anxiety, grief, PTSD, or simply learning to trust your body again.

Kintsugi reminds us that healing doesn't require pretending the breaking never happened. 💛

And it doesn't mean we have to become exactly who we were before.
