Happy March ☘️ and Medical Monday everyone!
When it comes to heart and aortic health, early detection is key. But with so many medical tests out there, it can be overwhelming to know what each one does. Today, I'll be going over a quick and simple overview of some common tests doctors use to assess your heart, aorta, and overall cardiovascular health.
🩻 Common Tests & What They Check
🔹 Cardiac Catheterization (Cath):
Used to check for coronary artery disease (blockages in the heart’s arteries).
Can help determine if interventions like stents or bypass surgery are needed.
🔹 Echocardiogram (Echo):
Assesses left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (a measure of how well your heart pumps).
Evaluates valve function to detect leaks or narrowing.
🔹 Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs):
Measures lung function and how well you breathe.
Important for those with heart-lung conditions or before certain heart surgeries.
🔹 Carotid Screening:
Uses ultrasound to check for narrowing or blockages in the carotid arteries, which supply blood to the brain.
Helps assess stroke risk.
🔹 CT Scan (Cardiac & Aortic Imaging):
Provides a detailed look at the heart and aorta to check for aneurysms, dissections, or plaque buildup.
Can help guide treatment for aortic disease.
💡 Why Do These Tests Matter?
Each of these tests plays a role in identifying silent or developing cardiovascular issues before they become life-threatening. If your doctor orders one, don’t panic! Early detection and prevention is key.
Stay proactive about your heart and aortic health, and always ask questions if you’re unsure about a test.
