It's Aortic Disease Awareness Month - What is arrhythmia? Why do some need pacemakers? Why does it happen and should we be worried?

Your heart has a natural electrical system that tells it when to beat. Most of the time, this system works quietly in the background, keeping your heartbeat steady and coordinated. But sometimes the heart’s rhythm becomes too fast, too slow, or irregular. This is called an arrhythmia.



Why does an arrhythmia happen?


There are many reasons someone may develop an arrhythmia. Changes in the heart caused by aging, heart disease, previous surgery, medications, electrolyte imbalances, or other medical conditions can affect the heart’s electrical system. Sometimes, an arrhythmia happens even when there is no obvious underlying cause.


Not all arrhythmias are the same. Some are harmless and may simply need to be monitored. Others can cause symptoms such as a racing or pounding heartbeat, dizziness, shortness of breath, fatigue, or fainting.


Why do some people need a pacemaker?


A pacemaker is a small device that helps regulate the heart when it beats too slowly or when the heart’s electrical signals are not traveling properly.

Think of it as a backup for the heart’s electrical system. When the heart needs help maintaining an appropriate rhythm, the pacemaker can send a small electrical signal to encourage it to beat.


Most traditional pacemakers have two main parts: a small generator, which contains the battery and electronics, and one or more leads, which carry electrical signals to the heart. The generator is usually placed just beneath the skin near the collarbone, while the leads travel through a vein into the heart. Some people may be candidates for a leadless pacemaker, a much smaller device that is placed directly inside the heart and does not require traditional wires.


Needing a pacemaker does not necessarily mean that your heart is failing. For many people, it simply means that the heart’s electrical system needs a little assistance. Modern pacemakers continuously monitor the heart and deliver electrical stimulation only when it is needed.


Should we be worried?


An arrhythmia deserves attention, but it does not always mean something is seriously wrong. The important thing is understanding what type of arrhythmia you have, why it is happening, and whether it needs treatment.


If you experience unexplained fainting, significant dizziness, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, or a new or persistent abnormal heartbeat, it is important to seek medical attention.


The good news is that arrhythmias can often be monitored and treated effectively. Whether the treatment is simply observation, medication, a procedure, or a pacemaker depends on the individual and the type of

rhythm problem.


Understanding what is happening with your heart can replace fear with knowledge, and knowledge is an important part of taking care of yourself.
